Bug expert Allen is telling us all about cockroaches! Explore these amazing insects and learn the truth behind some cockroach rumors in today’s episode of Curious By Nature.

How many body parts did Allen say cockroaches have? Can you name them all? We’ve got a great song, called the “Insect Song,” to help you remember them! Click here for the lyrics and the movements! Allen also answered some of your common insect bodies questions in this FAQ sheet that’s great for older scientists. Want to keep exploring? See what bugs you can find and record on your neighborhood animals worksheet.

Worms are so cool! They help give us healthy soil for our plants to grow, and you can even use them in your house! We’re talking about composting with worms (aka vermi-composting). We put together this great walkthrough for scientists of all ages to see what a worm bin looks like. Once you’ve checked out the walkthrough, see if you can spot worms in your yard or nearby park. What do you notice them doing? Record your observations on your neighborhood animals worksheet!
If you’re interested in vermi-composting, you can download our guide and check out our webinar.

Sustainability Spotlight
We’re proud to highlight Chicago Conservation Corps leader Rama Thoopal who engaged her community around vermi-composting! Her “Worms Are Great” project engaged a 1st grade classroom in her community to understand the value of worms and helped them learn how worms turn food waste into food for plants! Through her thoughtful presentation, Rama also helped the students to become more observant and caring of smaller creatures.
