What do snakes eat? How do they eat? How do they eat big things? Today, Airen and Lalainya are going to walk us through a feeding featuring a few of ...our snake friends to help answer those questions!
Snakes are carnivores and this video features snakes eating worms and rodents, like rats. Talk about what you're both seeing and learning from this video. Why is it important for snakes and other animals to eat? What do other animals eat? What is the same? What is different? There are many ways your young scientist might respond to this video from completely fascinated to a bit sad...or both! You can reassure them that their feelings are valid and okay.

-Paint (kids’ project paint or tempera)
-Markers or crayons
-Embellishments (optional): sequins, small beads, glitter, pine cone scales, colored paper
Directions:
-Cut your paper tubes into roughly equal lengths, between 1.5 and 2.5 inches. These will create the body of your snake. The more you have, the longer your snake will be and the more it will undulate!
-Decorate your snake body. Snakes’ coloration often helps them camouflage in their habitat, so they may be greens or browns, some have stripes while some are solid colors. You can make yours as realistic or as creative as you want! Color your pieces with paint, crayon, or marker. Color the “belly” side of the tube a lighter color. Create stripes or patterns. Create texture by gluing on additional materials
-Connect your pieces together to create the snake body. Cut a long piece of ribbon or string (long enough to go through all the tube pieces with extra out one end to pull
with) and attach these to the inside of the tube pieces. Position the ribbon/string along the bottom (belly) with tape or glue. Space the pieces together with a little room
between each one. Leave extra ribbon coming out the front to pull the snake along.
-Create a face by adding eyes and a tongue and take your snake for a slither!
front to pull the snake along.
*Paper Tube Butterfly*
Supplies:
-Acrylic or tempera paint (we like the washable variety)
-Any kind of paper
-Paintbrush
-Scissors
-Pencil or crayon
-Toilet paper roll insert
-An adhesive: glue, paste or tape will all work
-A smock or apron when painting is always a good idea!
Directions:
-Start by folding a piece of paper in half. Sketch out half of a butterfly using your pencil, then cut out both halves at the same time, so that you have two matching sides with a fold in the center.
-Open up your butterfly wings. Apply paint thickly, creating a design on one side only. Before your paint dries, fold your wings together, pressing down so that the design from one wing prints onto the other. Open up your wings to see your symmetrical design! Allow to dry.
-In the meantime, use an upcycled toilet paper roll to create the butterfly’s body. Decorate the body, paint a silly face, make antennae, and allow to dry. Once dried, glue or tape the wings onto the back!

Easy Kids Summer Nature Crafts
Friend of the Nature Museum Katherine Lampert is here to show us two ...
Friend of the Nature Museum Katherine Lampert is here to show us two of our favorite Summer Nature Crafts from past episodes of Curious By Nature! Learn how to make ...some cool watercolor crayon leaf and nature rubbings and an amazing nature kaleidoscope! You can find a full list of supplies and directions below.
*Nature Kaleidoscope*
Supplies:
-2 small mirrors
-Masking tape
-White paper
-Something to draw with (crayons, markers, pens — anything you have laying around will do)
-Bag for collecting objects from nature
Directions:
-Go on a nature hunt, collecting as many interesting objects as you can find, such as leaves, stones, twigs, pinecones, or whatever exists in your outdoor surroundings. Bring your treasures back to your “studio.”
-On a flat surface, tape the two small mirrors together, facing each other like a slightly open book. Open to about a 45-degree angle.
-Place a plain piece of paper underneath to eliminate the texture of your work surface.
-Arrange your nature objects on the paper inside the kaleidoscope.
-You can also experiment with sketching your objects on another piece of paper and sliding your drawing under the kaleidoscope.
-Look in the mirror to see your amazing symmetrical designs!
*Watercolor Leaf Rubbing*
Supplies:
-Wax crayon (any color works, clear or white will give an invisible design)
-Lightweight white paper, such as regular copy paper
-Watercolor paint
-Bag for collecting objects from nature
Directions:
-Go on a nature hunt to collect objects that have some texture, such as leaves with bumpy veins, twigs, flowers and seed pods.
-Back at your “studio” place a sheet of clean paper on your work surface. This will help eliminate the rubbing picking up any surface texture from the table. Arrange your nature objects, textured side up, on top of the paper. Place another sheet of paper on top.
-Using a crayon, begin to create your rubbing. Experiment with pressing very lightly at first and add more pressure later if you want to add more texture.
-Once finished, add a wash of watercolor paint over the top. If you used a clear or white crayon, watch your invisible design appear! If you used a colored crayon, try using paint colors that contrast with the crayon color so that your design really “pops.”
