Introducing Nature’s PlaySpace—an interactive experience that will connect our youngest guests to nature in new ways.
On November 4, 2021, our exhibits team began work on our biggest renovation project in 20 years. We’re thrilled to announce the construction of Nature’s PlaySpace.
Opening Fall 2022, this sprawling exhibit will upgrade and expand Hands-on Habitat—replacing the basement of the Extreme Green House and doubling the space of our beloved open play area. Bathed in natural light from east-facing windows, the space will soar with two-story high ceilings and variety of natural environments and interactives. Families with young children will be able to make connections to nature, while encouraging child-led play in a safe, sprawling environment. Interactives include water features, a treehouse, exploration tunnels, and more!
This $4 million project is made possible thank to private donations and an Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) Grant.
The conception and design of Nature’s PlaySpace is led by Alvaro Ramos, Chief Curator, Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, and the Nature Museum exhibits team, with assistance from our design and construction partners Luci Design,Solomon Caldwell Buenz (SCB), and CBRE.
