Celebrate Earth Day 50 at the heart of Chicago nature!

We're celebrating 50 years of Earth Day with a week full of nature, science, and conservation-themed programs and activities. From our family celebration to our panel discussion, there is something for everyone.

    Sound Environments: Rivers Empyrean Concert

    Saturday, April 18

    The widely acclaimed Chicago-based Fifth House Ensemble brings an evening-length concert performance of original compositions inspired by nature sounds, ecological data, and First Peoples.

    Earth Week Family Celebration

    Sunday, April 19

    Celebrate the 50th anniversary of Earth Day at the Nature Museum! From live animals to crafts, games to giveaways, our activities are fun for the whole family. Get up close with some of our endangered species, learn about our conservation programs, and meet some of the environmentalists working to make the world a more sustainable place.

    Cost: $25/adult member; $30/adult non-member; $15/child; free for children under 2

    The Nature of Conservation

    Tuesday, April 21

    Join us for a discussion on conservation ethics with a diverse panel of biologists, ecologists, and authors. Using renowned environmentalist Aldo Leopold's philosophy of land ethics as a jumping off point, panelists will share the role of moral responsibility to the natural world in their work, and the necessity of including nature in our definition of community. A cash bar will be available.

    Celebrate Earth Day wtih us! Explore the Micole Birdwalk for a bird's-eye view of North Pond and the city skyline, discover the various plants and animals that call our Nature Trails home, and learn what plants attract butterflies in our Butterfly Garden.

    Eat Like a Dragon Cooking Class

    Saturday, April 25

    Inspired by the favorite fruits and veggies of the lizards in our Dragons Alive! exhibit, participants will learn how to cook up some tasty, kid-approved snacks with our Green City Market family cooking class!

    Join us in Mysteries of the Marsh as our animal care staff and volunteers feed some of your favorite Nature Museum critters.

    First Flight Butterfly Release

    2pm to 2:15pm

    Join us every day at 2pm in the Judy Istock Butterfly Haven as we release newly emerged butterflies into the Haven for the first time! Watch as they take their first flight!
