Blanding’s turtles are native to the Midwest, but a number of factors have led them to become endangered in Illinois. A Turtle’s Story gives a behind-the-scenes look at the conservation efforts taking place at the museum, and across the city, to help give these turtles a much-needed head-start!

Since the 1990s, local conservation partners have worked together on a recovery program for Blanding’s turtles. The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County, working with the Nature Museum and other partners, has been conducting a ‘head-start’ program to help the turtles survive in the wild. Learn more about this program, and a head-start hatchling, through this exhibit.
